MMI vs Panel Interview: What to Expect at CRNA Programs
CRNA programs use different interview formats — MMI, panel, and one-on-one. Knowing what to expect before you walk in can make all the difference.
Getting invited to interview is a huge milestone in the CRNA application process. But knowing which interview format a program uses — and how to prepare for it — can be just as important as the invitation itself.
THE THREE MAIN CRNA INTERVIEW FORMATS
1. Panel Interview
The most common format. You sit across from a panel of 2 to 5 interviewers, which typically includes CRNA faculty, program directors, and sometimes current students. Questions tend to be behavioral and clinical, and the panel takes turns asking questions.
What to expect: 30 to 60 minutes, formal setting, structured questions, eye contact with multiple people.
How to prepare: Practice making eye contact with each panel member, not just the person who asked the question. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioral questions.
2. MMI (Multiple Mini Interview)
A growing format borrowed from medical schools. You rotate through 6 to 10 stations, spending 8 to 10 minutes at each one. Each station presents a different scenario, ethical dilemma, or clinical question, and a different evaluator scores you.
What to expect: Fast-paced, timed, no opportunity to go back and expand on previous answers.
How to prepare: Practice thinking out loud. MMI evaluators are assessing your reasoning process, not just your final answer. Time yourself answering questions in under 8 minutes.
3. One-on-One Interview
Less common but used by some programs. You meet individually with the program director or a faculty member for a focused conversation.
What to expect: More conversational tone, deeper dive into your personal statement and background.
How to prepare: Know your application inside and out. Be ready to expand on anything you wrote.
COMMON CRNA INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Regardless of format, these topics come up repeatedly:
- Why do you want to be a CRNA?
- Tell me about a time you advocated for a patient.
- Describe a conflict with a physician and how you handled it.
- What is your biggest weakness?
- Walk me through how you would manage a patient going into anaphylaxis.
- Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
HOW TO KNOW WHICH FORMAT A PROGRAM USES
This is exactly what the School Interview Styles section of CRNA Prep Hub is built for. We compile real, crowdsourced data from applicants who have interviewed at programs across the country — including the format, the vibe of the interviewers, and the actual questions asked.
Before your interview, check the program's profile on CRNA Prep Hub so you walk in knowing exactly what to expect.
