How CRNA Schools Calculate GPA
Most CRNA programs evaluate more than one GPA. The common ones are cumulative undergraduate GPA, science GPA, GPA over the last 60 credit hours, and graduate GPA if you hold a prior graduate degree. The same transcript can produce four meaningfully different numbers, and which one a program emphasizes can change whether you're competitive.

The four GPAs, and what each one rewards
Cumulative undergraduate GPA
Every credit from every undergraduate institution, including courses you'd rather forget. This is the number most applicants quote and the one that most often understates a strong recent record.
It rewards consistency. It punishes a bad first two years permanently, because early low grades stay in the denominator forever.
Science GPA
Typically the natural-science and math coursework a program specifies. Commonly included:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Microbiology
- Chemistry — often general, organic, and biochemistry
- Biology
- Statistics
- Pathophysiology and pharmacology, at some programs
Which courses count is program-defined. One school may include statistics and exclude nursing pharmacology; another may do the reverse. Do not assume a universal list.
Science GPA rewards applicants who did well in hard prerequisite coursework — which courses a program counts is set by its own prerequisite list, covered in CRNA school prerequisites — and it's frequently weighted heavily — the reasoning being that it predicts performance in a front-loaded doctoral curriculum built on physiology and pharmacology.
Last 60 credit hours
The most recent 60 semester credits, regardless of when or where earned. This is the number that gives applicants with a rough start a genuine second chance.
It rewards trajectory. A student who went 2.7 → 3.9 looks entirely different under this method than under cumulative.
Two mechanics matter: the cutoff usually falls mid-semester and programs differ on whether they include the partial term, and graduate credits may or may not be included. Both are worth confirming.
Graduate GPA
If you hold a prior master's or other graduate degree, many programs evaluate it separately. It can help demonstrate graduate-level capability, particularly with a weaker undergraduate record — though it rarely replaces the undergraduate numbers entirely.
Why the same transcript produces different numbers
Consider a nurse with this record:

Does retaking a class help your CRNA GPA?
It depends on the policy applied, and there are three you'll encounter:
Replacement. The new grade replaces the old in the calculation. Most beneficial. Less common at the graduate-admissions level.
Averaging. Both attempts count. A C retaken as an A yields a B average. Still helps, less dramatically.
Both grades count separately. Both remain in cumulative GPA. The retake adds credits and points but doesn't remove the original.
Many nurse anesthesia programs count all attempts, and some also want to see the original grade regardless of institutional forgiveness policies. Your undergraduate institution's policy and the CRNA program's policy are different things, and the program's governs.
Retakes are usually worth it when:
- The course is a required prerequisite you failed or nearly failed
- The grade is in a heavily weighted science course
- You have few enough remaining credits that cumulative GPA won't move much otherwise
- The program uses last-60, where recent A's carry real weight
Retakes are usually not the best use of time when you already have 150+ credits and a mid-range cumulative GPA. At that volume, individual retakes barely move the number. Additional graduate-level coursework or a strong science-heavy certificate often demonstrates more.
What if my GPA is below a program's minimum?
A listed minimum is typically a hard screen — files below it may not be reviewed. But "below minimum" is more nuanced than it sounds, because which GPA the minimum applies to matters.
A program requiring "3.0 minimum" may mean cumulative, science, last-60, or "any one of the above." An applicant at 2.9 cumulative but 3.5 over the last 60 may be eligible at a program applying the minimum to last-60, and ineligible at one applying it to cumulative.
This is why per-program requirement grids matter more than a general sense of your competitiveness. Two programs with identical stated minimums can evaluate you differently.
Applicant scenarios
Scenario A — the strong finisher. 3.15 cumulative, 3.75 last 60, 3.4 science. Best move: target programs weighting last-60 or reviewing holistically, and make the trajectory explicit in the personal statement rather than hoping it's noticed. Retakes are low value here.
Scenario B — the weak science block. 3.5 cumulative, 3.6 last 60, 2.9 science — organic chemistry and A&P II were rough. Best move: retake the specific weak sciences. Science GPA is often weighted heavily, and a small number of targeted retakes can move it substantially.
Scenario C — high credit volume. 3.1 cumulative across 175 credits from a prior degree plus nursing. Best move: not retakes — the denominator is too large. Graduate coursework, a strong CCRN, high-acuity experience, and programs that evaluate holistically.
Scenario D — clean but unremarkable. 3.4 across the board, no weak spots, no dramatic trend. Best move: stop optimizing GPA. Marginal gains are small. Acuity, leadership, references, and interview preparation are where this application is won.
The general principle: identify which GPA is your weakest relative to your targets, and act only on that. Undirected coursework is expensive and slow.
Calculating your own GPAs
For each method:
- Cumulative — total quality points ÷ total credit hours, across all undergraduate institutions
- Science — pull each program's list of included courses; you may need to calculate more than one version
- Last 60 — work backward from your most recent course until you reach 60 credits, noting where the boundary falls
- Graduate — separate from undergraduate; do not blend them
Two details that trip people up: transfer credits and pass/fail courses. Pass/fail grades usually carry no quality points and are excluded from the calculation but may still be visible to reviewers — particularly relevant for anyone with pandemic-era pass/fail coursework.
If your transcript spans multiple institutions or a decade, calculating this by hand is genuinely error-prone. Getting it wrong in the optimistic direction is worse than not calculating at all, because it drives program selection.
What committees notice about GPA
Direction. Improvement is read as maturation. Decline late in a program raises questions.
Where the weakness is. A C in a humanities elective is different from a C in physiology.
Whether you addressed it. An applicant who retook a weak science and earned an A has demonstrated something. An applicant who mentions the same weakness without acting on it has not.
